Things to do at Papeete Airport

Restaurants & Cafés

Faa'a International Airport offers less restaurant space than the big airports around the world. The travellers aren't expecting a great food area, just a café, snack counters and casual food.

These are often related to coffee, pastries, sandwiches, snacks, and fast foods. There are many flights coming in and out of this airport at odd hours, so the timing of opening hours may be subject to passenger schedules.

Don't assume you will have a variety of restaurant options if you're arriving late at night or departing very early. People with special dietary needs should consider having a proper meal before arriving at the airport or bringing a proper meal with them if it is permitted by the airline and the security.

Airports would have a greater chance of having food facilities than a large international airport, and food outlets would be in the vicinity of security controls; however, access to food outlets prior to getting on board should be confirmed.

Shops & Lifestyle Stores

PPT's emphasis is on duty-free items, French Polynesian travel necessities and souvenirs. While products like fragrance and cosmetics, alcohol and confectionery may be available for duty-free, their availability depends on the current retail selection and eligibility rules, and may differ from country to country.

It's also a hassle-free break for Polynesian goods. Among the souvenirs one is likely to find related to the islands are Tahitian vanilla, local souvenirs, beauty products and more. The black pearl is French Polynesia's most popular export. However, when you're shopping while travelling and buying costly pearl jewellery, you should ensure that you're buying from a reputable jewellery store and have receipts or other proof of authenticity.

Whereas other major international airports have much to offer, there is not so much to shop for at Tahiti – make important purchases in Papeete or on the island.

Lounges & Relax Spots

There are fewer lounges at PPT than in key international destinations. Depending on current airport arrangements, travel class and flight, eligible passengers might be able to use airline-associated or premium waiting facilities.

For travellers, it is a good practice to check lounge availability in direct line prior to their trip; it is possible that long-haul flights will leave late in the day.

There are also general areas for passengers to wait for flights at the terminal. If a long connection, choose a waiting room that is close to the departure section and check flight information.

AirportAssist might be able to help passengers with the arrangements of lounge/ VIP facilities before travelling.

Other Activities & Unique Features

Faas International Airport is more Polynesian than other airports of the same time period. The outside spaces of the terminal, combined with the local design, immediately convey the sense of Tahiti.

The traditional music and flower welcoming is also very attached to arrivals in French Polynesia, particularly for organised groups, transfers to/from hotels.

The airport is basically a transportation port and not a place for entertainment. If they can, it's better to take time to feed, shop or rest prior to taking their next flight.

Suggested Layover Itineraries

3-hour layover

Stay at the airport. Complete immigration/transfer procedures, then enjoy a snack, check the stores and remain close to the departure area.

5–6 hour layover

The extended connection is for a chance to relax from the immediate gate area. Eat, sample local products, if available, and use an appropriate lounge. It may be better not to leave the airport.

8+ hour layover

If you want to see Papeete, you can arrange a short trip after a long day's layover. Do not leave unless the requirements for entry, the time it takes to get your bags to and from the vehicle and the time it takes to travel to the area have a good margin. Late-night layovers will generally be more successful when the layover is near the airport.
